At Holy Family, our intent is to provide a high-quality mathematics curriculum that enables every child to become a confident, independent and successful mathematician. We believe that all children can achieve in mathematics and, through a mastery approach, we aim to develop a deep, secure and adaptable understanding of mathematical concepts.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children build upon prior knowledge and develop strong foundations before moving on to new learning. Through the use of concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract methods, children are supported in making connections and developing a thorough understanding of mathematical ideas.
We place mathematical talk, reasoning and problem solving at the heart of our teaching. Children are encouraged to articulate their thinking, explain and justify their answers, make connections and apply their knowledge confidently in a range of familiar and unfamiliar contexts. Children who require additional support are provided with appropriate resources, scaffolding and timely intervention, while those who grasp concepts quickly are challenged through opportunities to reason, problem solve and think more deeply.
Through the five big ideas of mastery – coherence, representation and structure, mathematical thinking, fluency and variation – we aim to develop curious, resilient learners who enjoy mathematics, embrace challenge and recognise that mistakes are an important part of learning.
Ultimately, our intent is for every child to leave Holy Family with secure mathematical knowledge, confidence in their own ability and a genuine enjoyment of mathematics, providing strong foundations for their next stage of education and for mathematics in everyday life.
